Trouble Getting Kids and Family to Eat Well?

Get them involved in planning, prepping, cooking and they will begin to eat much better. Here is my simple meal prepping plan, using my calendar so I can plan and prepare. This helps prevent that habit of reaching for poor food choices such as the fast food drive through, uber eats, etc.

Sit down with kids, maybe around a family dinner and begin to talk about the upcoming week. Teach them these life skills and solid information that will set them up for a life of success:

The Power of Family Meals & Nutrition Basics

  • Importance of family dinners for connection and well-being
  • How food affects energy, mood, and health
  • Teach kids to think before they eat: Whole foods vs. processed foods
  • Explore macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbs) in a simple way

Meal Plan & Grocery Shop with Kids

  • Benefits of planning meals ahead of time
  • How to build a balanced weekly menu
  • Get kids involved in meal planning (theme nights, favorite meals, new foods)
  • Write a grocery list together
  • Grocery store adventure: Learning about fresh ingredients, reading labels, choosing colorful produce

Explore Ingredients – Colors, Textures & Flavors

  • Teaching kids to appreciate different textures and flavors
  • Exploring vegetables: Crunchy, soft, sweet, bitter, savory
  • Hands-on activity: Let kids pick a new vegetable to try
  • The “eat the rainbow” approach: Why colorful foods matter
  • Simple taste tests to expand kids’ palates

Kitchen Skills & Basic Cooking Techniques

  • Age-appropriate cooking tasks for kids
  • Knife skills (safe cutting techniques using kid-friendly tools)
  • Basic cooking methods: Sautéing, roasting, steaming
  • Letting kids get hands-on: Cracking eggs, stirring, measuring
  • Fun recipe: Simple stir-fry or build-your-own salad

Meal Prep & Cook Together

  • Teach kids how to prep ingredients (washing, chopping, measuring)
  • Make cooking fun with games and teamwork
  • Batch cooking basics for busy families
  • Family cooking night: Everyone takes part in preparing dinner
  • Recipe idea: Build-your-own tacos or pizza night
